Its name derives from the Greek words apo (away) and phyllos (leaf), describing how it peels into layers when heated . This unique exfoliation property makes it a memorable specimen for collectors who prize its clear, square-cross-section crystals .
The Nashik quarries in Nashik District, Maharashtra, are a recognized basalt locality within the Deccan Traps volcanic province, known for producing valid basalt specimens from specific quarry sites like Nashik 1 and Nashik 2. While the main quarries yield basalt, nearby quarries in the Nashik District such as the Dhindori Quarry have produced notable zeolite minerals including goosecreekite, mesolite, stellerite, and powellite. Collectors value this region for its access to fresh basalt and the potential for finding associated zeolites in adjacent quarries within the same district.
