A cameo shell is typically a specimen of Cassis (helmet shell) or Cypraecassis, prized for the naturally layered bands of contrasting color in its shell wall, usually a white or cream outer layer over a darker brown or orange base. Carvers exploit these layers by cutting away the lighter surface to reveal the darker layer beneath, creating a raised relief image against a contrasting background, most classically a profile.
In shell cameo work, artisans combine relief carving for the main figure with fine impressed detailing for hair, drapery, and background texture.
Culturally, shell cameos rose to prominence in 18th and 19th century Europe, especially in Italy where Torre del Greco became a center of the craft, and they became popular souvenirs for travelers on the Grand Tour as well as symbols of romantic sentiment, mourning, and personal identity when worn as brooches or pendants.
