Hematite is an iron oxide mineral with the composition Fe2O3 and a principal ore of iron. Its name comes from the Greek haima, meaning “blood,” referring to the red streak produced by powdered hematite. This historic locale specimen reflects a mineral known for its metallic luster and earthy red varieties.
Bisbee, in Cochise County, southeastern Arizona, is a historic copper mining district centered in the Mule Mountains and founded as a copper, gold, and silver town in 1880. Its replacement deposits produced abundant oxidized copper minerals, with the district especially renowned for exceptional cuprite specimens that once rivaled the finest examples from England. Mines throughout the district also yielded lead, zinc, gold, silver, manganese, and barite, giving Bisbee enduring importance to collectors seeking classic Southwestern mineral specimens.
