Mimetite is a lead arsenate chloride mineral, Pb5(AsO4)3Cl, in the apatite group. It was first described in 1832 by François Sulpice Beudant, and its name comes from the Greek for “imitator,” a reference to its resemblance to pyromorphite.
San Francisco Mine, also known as the Cerro Prieto Mine, is in Cerro Prieto near Cucurpe in Cucurpe Municipality, Sonora, Mexico, and is recorded as an old mine that began in the late 1800s, closed in 1912, and was reopened in the mid-1980s. It was first worked for gold and later as a gold-silver-molybdenum mine, with ore production noted at 720 tons per day in 1909. The locality is especially prized by collectors for excellent wulfenite crystals and is also associated with gold, silver, and molybdenum mineralization.
