Chrome diopside is a chromium-bearing variety of diopside, with the formula Ca(Mg,Cr)Si2O6. Diopside was first described by René Just Haüy in 1801, and its name comes from Greek words meaning “two appearances”; the chromium-rich green color gives this gem its striking appeal.
