Quartz is silicon dioxide, SiO2, and “Herkimer Diamond” is a local name for its clear, doubly terminated crystals from Herkimer County, New York. The name dates to 1790 as “Little Falls Diamond,” and “Herkimer” comes from the county and its localities. This piece shows an excellent example of clarity and quality.
Specimen comes in a 1.25” black case.
Herkimer County in central New York is the classic locality for Herkimer diamonds, clear, doubly terminated quartz crystals found in cavities in dolostone. The county was created in 1791 and is named for General Nicholas Herkimer. For collectors, it remains one of the most important American sources of sharp, highly lustrous quartz crystals, with specimens prized for their natural clarity and distinctive double terminations.
