Smoky quartz is a variety of quartz, composed of SiO2, with color ranging from gray-brown to black. It was first described by Gustav Rose, and its name comes from the German term for its smoky appearance. Smoky quartz is also known for being color-sensitive, with heat or UV light able to fade it.
Minas Gerais is a major mineral-rich state in southeastern Brazil, long recognized for producing iron ore, manganese, gold, and a wide range of collector minerals from distinct geological settings. The state is especially famous for its pegmatites in the northwest granitic region, which have yielded tourmaline, beryl, quartz, and other classic specimen minerals. It also includes the Iron Quadrangle, one of Brazil’s most important mining districts, known for its vast iron and gold resources and its significance in the history of Brazilian mining. For collectors today, Minas Gerais remains one of the world’s most important sources of diverse and highly sought-after mineral specimens.
