Recently, these interesting crystals have been called “Disco Fire Quartz” on the market. I’ve always known it as “Orire or Orange River Quartz”.
Orange River is a vast mining area in Southern Africa spanning both the Namakwa/Nama Khoi side of Northern Cape, South Africa, and the Oranjemund area of ǁKaras Region, Namibia, along the Orange/Senqu River system. It is best known to collectors for quartz-area specimens, especially ferruginous quartz and fluorite, with fluorite reported as colorless to purple rounded crystals in crusts, and for occasional tourmaline finds. The locality covers a broad stretch of river country, so labels may reflect either the Namibian or South African side, which adds interest to specimens from this classic southern African source.
