Ametista do Sul, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, is the locality most closely associated with world-class amethyst from basalt-hosted geodes in the Serra Geral Formation. Collectors know it as the “world’s amethyst capital,” with mining centered around the town and a long belt of mines that has produced abundant amethyst and related agate from the Paraná basalt province. Specimens from this district are valued for their classic purple crystals and the locality’s strong reputation for significant production today.
