“Spirit” Amethyst is a trade name for amethyst, the purple variety of quartz composed of SiO2. Amethyst was first described in antiquity, with its name derived from the Greek amethystos, meaning “not intoxicated.” This distinctive material often displays crystals covered by a second generation of smaller quartz crystals.

Boekenhouthoek lies in Mkobola, Thembisile Hani Local Municipality, Nkangala District Municipality, Mpumalanga, South Africa, approximately 70 km northeast of Pretoria in the Bushveld Complex. Its granophyre host rocks contain quartz veins and quartz-amethyst crystals, including the locality’s celebrated South African “cactus” or “spirit” quartz. Amethyst is the most widespread variety, while white, gray, mauve, reddish-purple, brown, and yellow crystals are also known. These distinctive encrusted quartz specimens make Boekenhouthoek a notable and highly collectible locality.
