It was first described from Maynard’s Claim in Utah and was originally named bixbite by Alfred Eppler for Maynard Bixby. Its name was later changed to avoid confusion with bixbyite.

Starvation Canyon is a collecting locality on the south end of the Thomas Range in Juab County, Utah, about 1 mile northwest of the Topaz Mountain collection site. The area is part of the Thomas Range, a small desert mountain range known for Tertiary volcanic rocks and important deposits of fluorspar, beryllium, and uranium. Collectors also associate the locality with garnet-group material and nearby red beryl occurrences in the same district. The site is on a private claim, so collecting requires permission from the owners.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0336/3012/6217/files/58a3ac7f-d142-4e02-94e3-248e45dcdd85.jpg?v=1786914173
