Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline variety of quartz, with the composition SiO2, and it was described by Johan Gottlob Lehmann in 1767. Its name comes from Chalcedon, an ancient place in Asia Minor. Some chalcedony specimens show strong green fluorescence under UV light.
