Hessonite is a grossular garnet, with formula Ca3Al2(SiO4)3, prized for its brownish orange to cinnamon tones. Its name comes from the Greek hesson, meaning “inferior,” a nod to its lower hardness and density, and grossular was first described by Abraham Gottlob Werner in 1803 as “cinnamon stone,” later renamed for gooseberry-like color.
