Locality: Ojuela Mine, Mapimí, Mapimí Municipality, Durango, Mexico
Calcite is the principal carbonate mineral with the chemical formula CaCO3, composed of calcium and carbonate. It is a major component of limestone, which is used in road construction and as the source of lime in cement production.
The Ojuela Mine sits at the base of the northeast escarpment of the Sierra de Mapimi, about five miles southeast of Mapimi in Durango, Mexico, and was first discovered in 1660. This historic locality is renowned among collectors for producing exceptional specimens of smithsonite, often seen as whitish rice-grains or massive botryoidal crusts, along with rare minerals like plattnerite, Duftite, and marcasite. Geologically, the mine is part of a group of active workings that include the Cumbres, Esperanza, and Ojuela stopes, yielding a diverse array of lead, copper, and iron minerals. Its long mining history and unique mineral assemblage make it a highly relevant and sought-after source for serious mineral collectors today.
