A unique combo of common minerals. A light druzy dusting of Chalcedony sits on doubly-terminated Amethyst, on a rough matrix. It’s a contrast of colors and textures that hits the eyes and encourages you to look deeper. Lake Balkhash in Kazakhstan is a large inland lake divided by a strait into two distinct parts, with fresh water in the west and saline water in the east. The nearby city of Balkhash on the lake’s northern shore was founded as an industrial center built around copper mining and smelting, and copper is still exploited there today. For collectors, the locality is tied more to the historic copper district and its mining heritage than to a single famous mineral species, making it an important regional name in Kazakhstani mineral collecting.
