Hessonite is a variety of grossular garnet, with the formula Ca3Al2(SiO4)3. Its name comes from the Greek “hesson,” meaning inferior, a nod to its lower hardness and density than other garnets; it was recognized as grossular in the early 1800s and is prized for its cinnamon to yellow-orange color.
