Cobalt-bearing calcite is a pink variety of calcite, with cobalt substituting for calcium in the carbonate structure, giving it a distinctive color. It was originally described from the Vallone stope at Cape Calamita Mine on Elba Island, and its name simply reflects its cobalt content.
The Katanga Copper Crescent in Haut-Katanga, Democratic Republic of the Congo, is part of the broader Central African Copperbelt, an arcuate mineral district that extends through the DRC from Kolwezi through Kambove and Likasi to Lubumbashi. It is best known for its major copper endowment, with many recorded copper localities and numerous mines and prospects across the region. Collectors recognize the area for classic Central African copper specimens from localities such as Kambove, Kipushi, Kamfundwa, and Lubumbashi, where copper minerals and associated ore material have long been documented. Its continued relevance comes from its status as one of the world’s great copper provinces and a source of historically significant mineral specimens.
