Lusterous and contrasting - this is one of those pieces that the more you look, the more you see. Libethenite and malachite are copper minerals coating chrysocolla, a hydrated copper aluminum silicate. Libethenite is Cu2(PO4)(OH), malachite is Cu2(CO3)(OH)2, and chrysocolla has a variable hydrated composition. Their vivid green and blue colors create that striking copper-mineral association.
The Katanga Copper Crescent is a major copper-cobalt mining area in Haut-Katanga, DR Congo, encompassing renowned deposits near Lubumbashi, Kambove, and Kipushi. Geologically, it is known for sediment-hosted copper-cobalt deposits and has produced distinctive minerals including dioptase, cobaltian calcite, plancheite, quartz, amethyst, and exceptional baryte crystal clusters.
