Locality: M'sesa Mine, Kambove, Kambove Territory, Haut-Katanga, DR Congo

The Libethenite crystals covering this Malachite are the highest luster from a lot of 50+ pieces we received. Great color and a shine that demands a second look.

Libethenite is a copper phosphate hydroxide mineral, Cu2(PO4)(OH), often found with malachite. It was first described in 1823 by Wilhelm Haidinger, and its name comes from Libethen, the former name of Ľubietová in Slovakia.

M’sesa Mine is a copper locality in Kambove Territory, Haut-Katanga, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, within the Katanga Copper Crescent. It is known for copper mineralization and has produced notable specimens of cuprite and libethenite, with libethenite reported as large crystal plates up to 8 mm. The first specimens were collected in 1963, and the locality remains of interest to collectors for its classic Katangan secondary copper minerals.
