Locality: Colorado, USA
Pyrite is an iron sulfide mineral, FeS2, and the Earth’s most abundant sulfide mineral. Named in antiquity from the Greek pyr, meaning “fire,” it was known to Dioscorides around 50 CE. Its brass-yellow color earned it the nickname “fool’s gold,” and it is a source of sulfur used to make sulfuric acid.
Colorado, USA, is a broad mineral-producing region rather than a single mine locality, and it is best known to collectors for a wide range of classic Rocky Mountain occurrences spread across the state. Colorado has produced notable specimens from historic mining districts including silver, gold, fluorite, rhodochrosite, quartz, and other well-formed mineral habits that remain important in collections today. Its geology includes major mineralized belts and altered igneous and hydrothermal systems that have generated many of the state’s most recognizable specimen localities.
