This ‘spicy’ mineral can be toxic if consumed, it’s recommended to wash your hands after handling. It’s also quite photosensitive, so keeping it out of light is best for preservation of color. This piece passed through the hands of Dr. Nicholas Theiss, a well-known name in the collector world.
Realgar is an arsenic sulfide mineral, with the formula As4S4. It was named from Arabic “rahj al-gahr,” meaning “powder of the mine,” and was known as a mineral pigment in Byzantium by the early 1200s.
Mined near Eureka in Eureka County, Nevada, the mining area sits within a major Carlin Trend gold district in north-central Nevada, a region best known for its large-scale gold deposits and mining activity. The district has produced important gold ore bodies, including the Gold Quarry Mine and other nearby mines that define the Carlin Trend’s reputation among collectors and mining historians. For mineral collectors, the area remains significant as one of Nevada’s most important gold-producing regions and a classic representative of the state’s Carlin-type mineralization.
