A well-terminated and isolated crystal of Afghanite, perched in the center of matrix, drawing your eye into the center.
Afghanite is a rare sodium-calcium aluminosilicate mineral with chloride and sulfate. It was first described in 1968 by P. Bariand, F. Cesbron, and R. Giraud, and its name comes from Afghanistan, the country where it was discovered.
Ladjuar Medam, in Sar-e-Sang, Kuran wa Munjan District, Badakhshan, Afghanistan, is part of the famous Sar-e-Sang lapis lazuli district in the Hindu Kush. It is a skarn deposit long associated with lapis lazuli and has probably been worked since the 7th millennium BC. Collectors also encounter associated minerals from the area such as afghanite, albite, marialite, dolomite, and richterite, reflecting the locality’s complex metamorphic geology. Today it remains one of the most important classic sources for historic and collectible lapis lazuli specimens.
