Topaz is a nesosilicate mineral with the formula Al2SiO4(F,OH)2, prized for its broad range of colors and its Mohs hardness of 8. It was named for Topazios Island in the Red Sea, and it has been recognized since before 1959; in antique times, the name likely referred to what is now peridot.
