Size: Miniature - 5.5 × 3 × 3 cm

Something to set this piece as unusual compared to other Spirit Quartz’, the amethyst grew on Smoky Quartz, which you can see easily when viewed from the bottom. Quartz, variety amethyst, is SiO2 and is prized for its violet-purple color. In this case, we see an orange color as the result of Iron. The name comes from Greek, meaning “not drunk,” and the mineral was first described by Georgius Agricola in 1546. Its purple color comes from manganese.

Boekenhouthoek, in Mkobola within Thembisile Hani Local Municipality of Mpumalanga’s Nkangala District, is a locality best known to collectors as the source of South African “cactus” or “spirit” quartz. The quartz from this area is dominated by amethyst, but it also occurs in white, gray, mauve, reddish-purple, brown, and yellow varieties, making it a favorite among mineral enthusiasts. The specimens come from Bushveld Complex rocks about 70 km northeast of Pretoria, with quartz veins and crystals hosted by the granophyre of the Rashoop Granophyre Suite.
