Peridot is the green gem variety of forsterite, with the formula Mg2SiO4. It was known in antiquity, and its name likely comes from Persian or Arabic for “gem,” while St. John’s Island in the Red Sea was worked for it by 300 B.C.
Sapat Gali is a deposit northeast of Naran in the Kaghan Valley of Mansehra District, where ultramafic rocks occur in serpentinized shear zones in dunite within the southern amphibolitic belt of the Kohistan arc. It is best known for olivine, especially sharp, well-formed forsterite crystals, and the locality also has recorded chromite, ferrichromite, clinochlore, serpentine subgroup minerals, spinel, garnet group minerals, and tourmaline. The site remains relevant to collectors for Pakistani peridot and other classic ultramafic assemblage specimens from a well-defined mineral deposit.
