Sapphire is the blue gem variety of corundum, with chemical formula Al2O3, and its name derives from the Greek sappheiros via Latin and Hebrew roots, originally possibly referring to lapis lazuli. A common everyday use is in watch jewels and precision instrument bearings due to its extreme hardness, with Montana’s Yogo deposit yielding sapphires for these industrial applications since the late 19th century.
