Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz with the chemical formula SiO2, its color arising from trace iron and natural gamma irradiation within the crystal lattice. The name comes from the Greek "amethystos," meaning "not drunk," as ancient people believed drinking from amethyst cups prevented intoxication.
Ametista do Sul, located in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, is renowned as the world's amethyst capital and the primary source of current global amethyst production. The municipality, originally named São Gabriel and renamed in the 1980s, produces massive amethyst geodes found within the Serra Geral Formation basalts through a two-stage geological process involving magmatic protogeode formation and low-temperature infill. Over a 20-kilometer stretch, numerous mines such as Salles, Célio, and Testa extract these geodes from flat-lying basalt layers by punching parallel tunnels into the rock. Collectors prioritize this locality for its world-class quality amethyst specimens, which are distinguished by their huge size and exceptional clarity.
