Celestine is strontium sulfate, SrSO4, and the most common strontium mineral. Abraham Gottlieb Werner renamed it in 1798 from the Greek word for celestial, inspired by the original specimen’s delicate blue color. It is a major ore of strontium.
The Sakoany deposit lies in Katsepy Commune, Mitsinjo District, Boeny, western Madagascar, and is known for artisanal celestine mining. Its signature specimens are celestine crystals in blocky to elongated, tapering forms, with sharply developed crystals reaching up to 15 cm. The deposit’s well-formed blue celestine specimens make Sakoany a notable locality for collectors seeking distinctive Madagascan sulfate minerals.
