Larimar is a blue, copper-colored variety of pectolite with the formula NaCa2Si3O8(OH). First discovered in the Dominican Republic in 1974, its trade name combines Larissa, the discoverer’s daughter, with mar, Spanish for “sea.” Its blue color and polished appearance make it prized as a gem and ornamental stone.
Filipinas Larimar Mines lies near Los Checheses in the Sierra de Baoruco of Barahona Province, southwestern Dominican Republic. Discovered in 1974, this group of small mines is the type locality and only known source of larimar, the distinctive blue, copper-bearing variety of massive pectolite. Formed in hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks, larimar is prized as a gem and ornamental stone, making material from this locality especially significant to mineral and lapidary collectors.
