This one stands out from the lot. Most Celestine from this locality is pale to denim blue. The “Green” in this Celestine is caused by Sulfur.
Celestine is the strontium sulfate mineral SrSO4, first described in 1791 and renamed in 1798 from the Greek cœlestis for celestial due to its faint blue color. It is the most common strontium mineral and serves as the primary source for strontium used in red fireworks and signal flares.
The Sakoany deposit in Katsepy Commune, Mitsinjo District, Boeny, Madagascar, is an artisanal mining site renowned for producing exceptional celestine specimens. This locality yielded sharp, well-formed blocky to elongated celestine crystals reaching up to 15 cm, displaying medium to pale blue colors with a bright luster . Active mining for celestine at Sakoany began around 1999, establishing it as a significant source for collectors seeking high-quality blue sulfate minerals . The deposit remains a notable Madagascar locality for celestine, celebrated in mineralogical literature for its distinctive crystal habits and vibrant coloration .
