Size: Miniature - 3.2 × 2.6 × 2 cm
A highly lusterous and cubic Galena from a well-known mining area. Galena is a sulfide mineral with the formula PbS and the chief ore of lead. Pliny the Elder named it in 77 to 79 from the Greek galene, meaning “lead ore”; it has long supplied lead and silver, and its lead now serves familiar uses such as batteries.
Reynolds County, in the Ozark Foothills of southeast Missouri, is part of the Viburnum Trend mining region and is geologically tied to the state’s lead-zinc district. It is best known to collectors for notable Pb-Zn occurrences such as the Sweetwater Mine near Ellington and the Fletcher Mine area, where galena has been documented. The county’s rugged terrain and long mining history have made it an important locality for specimens from Missouri’s carbonate-hosted ore systems.
