Amethyst is a violet to purple variety of quartz with the chemical formula SiO2, where color arises from trace iron and natural gamma irradiation. Its name comes from the Greek "a-methystos," meaning "not drunk," as ancient people believed it prevented intoxication and carved drinking cups from it.
