Hanksite is a rare evaporate mineral with the formula Na22K(SO4)9(CO3)2Cl. It was first described in 1878 by F. W. Clarke, and its name honors American chemist Henry G. Hank.
Searles Lake in San Bernardino County, California, is a dry saline playa on the floor of Searles Valley in the Mojave Desert, with Trona on its western shore. It is geologically known for thick beds of crystalline evaporites and brines, and for long-term production of borax beginning in 1873, followed by sodium sulfate, sodium carbonate, and halite. For collectors, the locality is especially significant for its classic evaporite minerals and well-known saline lake specimens from one of the largest such deposits in the United States.
