Pyromorphite is a lead chloride phosphate, Pb5(PO4)3Cl, and a secondary mineral from oxidized lead deposits. It was named in 1813 by Johann Friedrich Ludwig Hausmann from Greek words meaning “fire” and “form,” because it can grow crystalline on cooling after melting.
Bunker Hill Mine in Wardner, Shoshone County, Idaho, is one of the classic lead-silver mines of the Coeur d’Alene district, first discovered in 1885 and first producing in 1886. It is historically known for large Ag-Pb-Zn ore production and for yielding collector material including native silver, cerussite, pyromorphite, smithsonite, anglesite, calcite, chalcopyrite, and acanthite. The mine was worked in multiple long periods and is part of the famed Wardner mining camp, making it a significant locality for specimens from Idaho’s Silver Valley today.
