Pyrite is a pale brass-yellow iron disulfide mineral (FeS2) named in antiquity from the Greek "pyr" for fire because sparks flew when struck. It is often called fool's gold due to its metallic luster and brass-yellow color that mimics gold but is much harder and lighter.

West Java Province, located on the western part of Java Island with its capital in Bandung, is a geologically active region known for its stratovolcanoes such as Tangkuban Parahu, which exhibits recent uplift and hydrothermal activity. The province has produced notable mineral specimens including calcite, illite, and the rare silver-telluride stützite from the Arinem vein in Garut Regency. Its diverse geology, featuring geothermal fields like Darajat and mineral deposits such as the Gunung Subang, makes it a significant locality for collectors seeking unique volcanic and telluride minerals. West Java remains one of Indonesia's most populous and mineral-rich provinces, offering collectors access to distinctive specimens from active volcanic and geothermal environments.
