Vesuvianite, also called idocrase, is a calcium-aluminum cyclosilicate mineral with formula Ca10Mg2Al4(SiO4)5(Si2O7)2(OH)4. René Just Haüy introduced the name idocrase in 1799, derived from Greek words meaning mixed form. It forms in crystalline limestone through contact metamorphism.
