Black Amethyst is a marketing name for exceptionally dark amethyst, the purple variety of quartz colored by iron impurities. Amethyst was named from the Greek amethystos, meaning “not intoxicated,” reflecting an ancient belief that it prevented drunkenness.
Artigas Department in northern Uruguay is renowned for amethyst workings concentrated roughly 30 kilometers south of the city of Artigas across an area of about 160 square kilometers. The deposits occur in basalt and are especially noted for richly colored amethyst geodes, including distinctive quartz casts after calcite. These celebrated Uruguayan specimens, along with associated quartz varieties and exceptional geode interiors, make Artigas a significant locality for collectors of fine display minerals.
