Watch the video to see the parallax phenomenon, which is caused by great transparency between structured bands, creating a ‘chatoyant’ visual effect. Only a small percentage of Agates can have this phenomenon.
Agate is a banded form of chalcedony, a variety of quartz with the formula SiO2. It was first described from the Achates River in southwestern Sicily, and its name comes from that place. Its colorful banding makes it a favorite gemstone for polished ornaments.
