Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate, MnCO3, prized for vivid pink crystals and classic association with quartz. It was first described in 1813 by Johann Friedrich Ludwig Hausmann, and its name comes from the Greek words for “rose” and “color.”
The Sweet Home Mine on Mount Bross in the Alma Mining District of Park County, Colorado, is one of the world’s most famous specimen localities, best known for exceptional rhodochrosite. It was worked primarily for mineral specimens rather than bulk ore, and the site also produced collectible fluorite, quartz, pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, tennantite, freibergite, and huebnerite. The mine gained lasting fame for producing the “Alma King,” one of the great rhodochrosite specimens, and it remains highly important to collectors for its superb cabinet and thumbnail-quality mineral pieces.
