Quartz var. “Black” Amethyst is a marketing name for deeply colored violet quartz, sometimes appearing nearly black from inclusions. Amethyst is quartz with formula SiO2, colored by iron and irradiation. Its name comes from the Greek amethystos, meaning “not intoxicated,” reflecting an ancient belief that it prevented drunkenness.
Artigas Department in northern Uruguay is renowned for amethyst workings concentrated roughly 30 kilometers south of the city of Artigas across an area of about 160 square kilometers. The region’s basalt-hosted geodes have produced richly colored amethyst, including distinctive quartz specimens formed as casts after calcite. Renowned for collectible amethyst geodes and cabinet specimens, Artigas remains one of Uruguay’s most important and recognizable mineral-producing districts.
