Two generations of Manganese Oxide creates a stunning contrast of high luster, silver, acicular needle-crystals on top of a matte grey first generation. We also see what, at first glance, appears to be Calcite growing on top, but this has yet to be confirmed as Calcite.

Manganese oxide is a broad name for manganese oxides and hydroxides of uncertain composition, often including pyrolusite, MnO2. The name comes from manganese, first described by Johan Gottlieb Gahn in 1774, with the word rooted in the earlier term magnesia and the Greek magnēs; pyrolusite is widely used in dry-cell batteries.

The Anti-Atlas Mountains in southern Morocco form one of the country’s four main mountain ranges and are a major mineral province with numerous documented occurrences. The range is especially noted for the Bou Azzer mining center and nearby districts such as Aghbar, and the locality is associated with Carboniferous-age mineralization. Collectors value the area for its rich suite of mineral occurrences and its long history of producing notable specimens from the Drâa-Tafilalet region.
