Calcite (CaCO3) is a carbonate mineral whose twinned crystals form when two individuals join across a specific plane. These distinctive twins reflect a crystallographic relationship involving a 180-degree rotation, creating mirrored forms with characteristic re-entrant angles.
The Buena Tierra Mine is located at Francisco Portillo in the West Camp of Mexico’s Santa Eulalia Mining District, Chihuahua, a historic silver and base-metal district known for massive sulfide manto and chimney orebodies with local iron-calcic skarns. It is particularly recognized for colorful calcite, including orange, orange-red, and hematite- or limonite-coated crystals, as well as distinctive butterfly-like twinned specimens. With Santa Eulalia’s long production history and celebrated mineral diversity, Buena Tierra material remains an appealing choice for collectors of classic Mexican calcite.
