Size: Small Cabinet - 8.3 × 6.4 × 1.5 cm
A unique plate with interesting colors. The green is caused by a Chlorite layer in the agate banding. The ‘Piña’ formations, or flowers, are a more uncommon growth of these special grade Amethysts.
Amethyst is a violet to purple variety of quartz, with the formula SiO2. Its name comes from the Greek a-methystos, meaning “not drunk”; it was described in ancient times and long associated with wine cups.
Artigas Department in northern Uruguay is best known among collectors for the amethyst district centered around the city of Artigas, whose workings lie about 30 km south of town across a broad area of roughly 160 km². The department also includes mineral localities such as Santa Ana Quarry, and it is a classic source of amethyst specimens from Uruguay. For mineral collectors today, Artigas remains one of the country’s most important and recognizable gemstone-producing regions.
