Filipinas Larimar Mines in Los Checheses, Sierra de Baoruco, Barahona Province, is the classic Dominican locality for larimar, a bluish variety of pectolite used as a gem and ornamental stone. The site consists of many small mines scattered across a few square kilometers of hillside in hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks, and larimar was first discovered there in 1974. It remains the locality where larimar was originally described and the principal source for collectors seeking material from the type area.
