This ‘Champagne’ Topaz crystal has excellent rainbows caused by a plane in the crystal reaching the entirety of the crystal face and is the prized thumbnail (to me anyways, I like the weird ones) that we’ve received of Topaz from this locality.
Topaz is a nesosilicate mineral with formula Al2SiO4(F,OH)2. It was first described in 1768 by J.G. Gahn, and its name comes from Topazios, the ancient Greek name for St. John’s Island in the Red Sea.
Dassu is a former village locality in Braldu Valley, Shigar District, Gilgit-Baltistan, in northern Pakistan, set along the Braldu River amid high-altitude granitic pegmatites. The area is geologically known for complex pegmatite outcrops between about 2,500 and 3,500 meters, and it has produced extraordinary aquamarine and topaz specimens, often found on feldspar. It remains a notable collector locality because of the quality and character of its pegmatite minerals, especially its fine aquamarine and topaz.
