Locality: Mamuju Regency, West Sulawesi Province, Indonesia

Size: Miniature - 4.9 × 3 × 2 cm

Grape Agate is a trade name for spheroidal aggregates of purple quartz or chalcedony, with SiO2 composition and radiant fibers. First described from Indonesia, its grape-like name reflects rounded grape-shaped spheres rather than true agate. The spheres’ vivid color and excellent luster make each specimen especially eye-catching.

Mamuju Regency in West Sulawesi, Indonesia, is known for a series of mineral-bearing deposits extending from Pantai Ngalo northward toward Mamuju and the Takandeang area. The locality is especially recognized for “grape agate,” a market name for distinctive spheroidal aggregates of amethystine quartz and chalcedony. Its unusual rounded forms and rich purple coloration have made Mamuju specimens highly appealing to collectors, while the region’s documented uranium potential adds geological significance to this emerging Indonesian mineral locality.
