Selenite is the transparent variety of gypsum, a calcium sulfate mineral with the formula CaSO4·2H2O. Its name comes from the Greek word for "moon," reflecting its pale, moon-like white reflections, and despite the name, it contains no selenium. A common everyday use for gypsum is in drywall for home construction.
Boulemane Province in the Fès-Meknès Region of Morocco is a notable collector locality for exceptional satin spar gypsum, particularly the big pure blocks found near Enjil at the headwaters of the Moulouya River. The province also contains the Taboudaharte mine and Tafraoute maar, which are recognized localities within this mineral-rich area of the Atlas basin. Collectors value this region primarily for its high-quality gypsum specimens that are distinctive to Moroccan mineralogy. The area remains relevant today as a source of these fine satin spar blocks for mineral collections.
