Rutile is titanium dioxide, TiO2, a titanium oxide mineral known for its sharp, slender crystals. It was first described in 1803 by Abraham Gottlob Werner, and its name comes from the Latin rutilus, meaning reddish. In quartz, its golden needles can form striking star-like inclusions prized by collectors.
