Amethyst is the vivid violet-to-purple variety of quartz, composed of SiO2. First described scientifically by Des Cloizeaux in 1856, its name comes from the Greek amethystos, meaning “not drunk.” Trace iron and natural irradiation create its juicy color, which can fade or shift dramatically with heating.
Artigas Department in northern Uruguay is renowned for its amethyst workings, concentrated roughly 30 km south of the city of Artigas across an area of about 160 km². The deposits occur in basalt and are especially noted for richly colored amethyst geodes, including distinctive quartz specimens formed as casts after calcite. These celebrated Uruguayan specimens, along with associated quartz varieties and geodes, make Artigas a premier locality for collectors seeking classic South American amethyst.
