Smoky quartz is a gray to black variety of quartz (SiO2) whose color comes from gamma irradiation and trace aluminum in its crystal lattice. It is dichroic, shifting from darker yellow-brown to lighter red-brown in polarized light, and its color fades above 200–300°C or under prolonged UV exposure.
